I met Bob McEuen when I came back to SDSU in 1975 to begin teaching here. He was the only geophysics prof at that time. As a hybrid geologist/geophysicist we hit off and had many good lunch times together. I got to know his wife Cecily and their three beautiful, vivacious, and very intelligent daughters--chiefly as baby sitter :-). Also turned out that my sister taught them in the third grade. During my first semester here he announced that he was going on sabbatical, and so I took his place the following year teaching intro, petroleum, and mining geophysics and intro. seismology. Shortly after returning, he retired from SDSU and began a geophysics exploration company. He hired one of our geophysics majors, Ed Gustafson, and they did everything from locating spanish grave sites in Old Town to geothermal exploration in Nevada, to looking for leaks in the liners of waste repositories around the country. Until recently he kept his interest in the department and in geology by coming to our Wednesday pm lectures and the monthly San Diego Association of Geologists talks. When his health began he moved to Indiana (?) to be close to his youngest daughter who recently got a position in biology/ecology at the University of Indiana. His other two daughters are also married, and have beautiful intelligent kids.

Over the 30 years that I knew him Bob changed little. He was always quiet, soft-spoken, friendly, and quite intelligent. The wonderful sparkling kids that he and Cecily raised show that he must have been a very good father as well as good geophysicist.

Dear Monte,
Thanks a million for the nice reminiscences about Robert's professional life as well as the McEuen/Marshall connection. Our entire family will be celebrating our loss and his life when we scatter Robert's ashes in our beloved Sierras. One amendment to your wonderful blog. I live in Denver in a Sr.apartment close to our daughter, Mary, and her family. Amy teaches at the Univ. of Ill. in Springfield and just had her second little one (a girl) on March 21. Becky and her family live near Minneapolis MN. Thanks once again for your tribute to Robert. Cecily
